End of an Era

So we are done with class and projects and this will probably be my final blog for a while. I have enjoyed this calss and what it has allowed me to see. I hope to use these skills in a future as hopefully a career in marketing. They will be a valuable tool in the growing world of visual communication. Its been fun and here is my final project.

The End of the End

I feel my final project went well and I enjoyed making the film. We gave presentations this week and I enjoyed seeing everyone's projects and all the different approches they had for each thing they did. I feel mine was a little below most of them but that doesn't bother me. I will post a link to the film when it gets uploaded but I am having problems with my USB port right now.

here is my fianl write up for my project read if you want:
What Are Friends For?
My project was a series of scenes with small visual changes in each one. The scenes were closely related to the previous scene and carried the same message of friendship. I shot each scene with my own camcorder in a fixed position except for one of the scenes where I moved the camera around. I wanted to start off with someone in the room and having one of them already in there reading was the only solution because a TV show wasn’t going to remain constant in each scene.
Scene 1(Base):
This was the base scene for the rest of the movie. I had the camera in the fixed position and the actors were wearing normal clothes to reflected an everyday mood. The fixed position was a strong visual tie between the scenes.
Scene 2(Clothes):
This scene was the same as the last except for the shirts they are wearing. They have colors on that reflect the mood they are in, dark blue for gloomy and tie-died for cheerful. I was hoping that the color change would help promote the mood the actor was in during the scene. The camera remained in the fixed position to tie back into the last scene.
Scene 3(Camera):
In this scene the actors went back to what they were wearing in the first scene and the camera is removed from its fixed position. I tried not to focus on one person too long and put them in the center of the camera. I did this because I think it helps you feel more a part of the scene. You aren’t going to focus on both of them in real life so the camera moves back and forth in the scene.
Scene 4(Locations):
In the final scene I removed them from the base location and they remained wearing the same clothes from the base scene. There were no other major changes in this scene except that you view the actors from behind. It makes you feel as if you are in the car but the camera remains in a fixed position. I left in the long walk to the car to make it seem like the actor is taking his time because of his mood.
Credits:
I did a very small montage of “bloopers” from the film to give a sense of the mood that was around when we were shooting. The song I chose was “We are not going to make it” by The Presidents of The United States of America. Whenever I listen to this song I get this feeling of friendship, meaning that no matter what happens we are together and we are having fun. The text remained in the same position and the same through out the film to have the constant visual aspect I was going for to help tie into the movie. The block lettering gives this informative mood that stands out but I feel it adds a bit of necessary contrast to the joking nature of the script.
I wanted to do a movie because I have never taken on a film project. Also, I thought of this comedy routine I had seen before that did the same thing. Over a series of the same scene they did the same thing but at a faster pace each time ending with them running around and screaming. I wanted to do something along these lines but try to only focus on visual changes. I feel I did this well and still keep some comedy in the present in the scene. The script is reminiscent of some conversations I have had with friends in the ending humor of the scene.
The first major problem I had was writing the script. I felt like I couldn’t write anything that would make sense and avoided it for a while. I would write a few lines then not think they were able to do what I wanted for the scene. I finally pulled myself together and wrote the whole script. I had my roommate who is in the movie proof read it and point out a few things that didn’t make sense. The second problem was planning the shoot date and time. I had projects or regattas or one of the people was out of town. We finally shot most of it before Thanksgiving Break and finished soon after we came back. The final problem that was the most stressing was computer (and user) error when I accidentally deleted the whole project off my computer. Luckily there wasn’t an over bearing amount of editing to be done because the scenes were all done in one take.
In conclusion I feel the message of friendship is strong and if this had been a larger scale project I would have been able to make stronger visual changes. I also feel its hard to visually change the message of friendship. Maybe if I had actual actors the mood would have been conveyed stronger but I feel their slip ups add to the mood and feeling of a cheap, short independent film. I had fun and now know much more work goes into making even a short film than I had previously thought.

Whats in the Remix?

Digital remix is about picture manipulation and is seen in almost every image you see now. They use it in movies, tv shows, magazines, and thing with photography to enhance the image or make it what the creator wants it to be. It can be used for fun or serious things and is becoming more and more popular. It can be as simple as putting to photos together or be elaborated and extensive that requires more than just MS paint.
Are assignment ins class was to get back in the groups we were in for the cartoon and come up with three pictures on non-local issues. We were sadly only able to come up with one photo.

The photo we made was to make fun of an anti gay-speaker whos name currently alludes me. We photoshoped his head onto the body of a male dancer on a gay pride parade float. I feel our message was made. Its amussing and kind of disturbing to what extent someone could go with digital remix. The topics that could be addressed or the things that have been already changed.

The Simple Cartoon

So we were talking about cartoons in class. The history and use of them. Its funny that the main use of them is satire and that was the origianl use of them as well. We had to make one in our class as a group. We had writers, story boarders, graphic artists and manager/editor. Its interesting to see that there is that many people that go into the creation of just on cartoon like a three cell comic.
Our cartoon was making fun of the standings Clemson was trying to receive in football and acedemics. We felt there were many different stand points on this topic and which is more important.

I think we accomplished the quesitoning of which rank is more important to you. The biggest of topics are sometimes addressed in the simplest manner which is a good reason for using cartoons.

Serious Game

In class we looked at two different games in dept, World of Warcraft(WOW) and America's Army(AA). They can both be approached differently from serious standpoints.
WOW is probably taken quite seriously by gamers with its fantasy elements of character and world design. The endless amount of customization for the character lets it become more personal allowing you to become this fantasy hero you wanted to be in your mind. The ever expanding world and wide range of quests you can embark on involve more and more involvement of the player. The fantasy element of design is perfect for this for its more cartoonish in a way of not being realistic in character design and races to choose from. This is perfect for character creation and player involvement; for the limits are almost unknown.
AA is taken serious from its game play design and realistic elements the play a strong role in the game. It is basically a recruiting tool for the US Army but allows you to see how much is expected of a person in the army. Countless training missions need to be done before you can do certain missions and realistic elements are incorporated such as stamina, limited ammunition, and a strong reliance on team play. The graphics are as realistic as possible to give you a real life feel and while keeping the game element alive. Real life people are used as in-game characters letting you see the human element in the army.
Both games are pretty unique in their design and intention but a great length of time has been involved in creating these to serious games. I guess seriousness of a game is not just determined by design and game play but also by the numerous factors of player involvement that is in mind when developed.

Progress 3

So I have not written a progress report in a while, well at least since the midway report "Thus Far..."
I have the script completed after a slight revision and shooting is just about to be wrapped up. I am re shooting on of the scene takes because I want it to open a different way. The scene is the alternate location one I didn't like how I shot how it opened so we need to basically re shoot the whole scene.
The editing won't be too difficult since most of the scene are one take with out camera changes. The one that will be most difficult will be the scene with the camera actually moving through out the shot and probably the scene with just still shots.
Hopefully it won't be as grueling a task for I have had a roommate who made movies for fun and saw how he did some of things involved in editing. We'll see if I have to say hello to an all nighter; hopefully not.
I present on Tuesday Dec 4. Wish me Luck!

The New Canvas

So we are currently discussing computer graphics in class. I feel that they are a new way of defining a style of art medium. Most images now photo or film get altered to the slightest degree and that will be greatly impacting in the near future. CG is also something to look forward to, its development is still growing rapidly and we see these adavence long after they happen. Its growth can help tap into the imagination and take what was a dream or fantasy and pull it into this world for all to view. Video games are a good sign of this but movie development his another. Some films had to wait for this advancement while others have been remade into a new visual masterpiece. I light the slight touches of CG and limitless imagination that can be let loose upon the world through it.

Thus Far...

My project is strating to come together even more even though I've only completed the preliminary things
I plan to shoot with my Sony Handyman Camcorder which will be very convenient.
The actors will be my roomate and one of my close friends.
The scenes will be shot in my apartment living room and in my car. I chose my car because of the trunk space so it will be easier to shoot the scene.
costumes will be what the actors will have to wear, casual. The scene wear they have a costume change will be one wears brighter colors and the other more dark and pale colors. I might choose to do one where they wear business suits and the only big differences between them is the color of tie they wear.
I'm still not too sure about the sock puppets but I hope that they get used.
I plan to do all the camera work and editing.
The script is still pretty rough, which means the first draft is still being drafted. I'm finding it hard to fill out a script for as long as I want it to be and keep it ambiguous about what they are talking about.
I plan to get shooting done before thanksgiving or atleast a start so when I get back I know what can be done and how much time I will need.

Analyzing the Analyst

In the last lab we had we visually analyzed CSI to analyze how they put together a TV show.
Opening scene, where it flashes from the opening scene to places in Las Vegas.
lots of close-ups on faces faces; camera is usually eye level
always a close-up on things that are being closely examined.
the camera starts by looking at something in the scene then moves to look at the actors in the scene. the camera never stays focused on one thing for too long.
mostly focuses on the person talking
the camera was slow moving when entering the courtroom
when they look at flash backs to the scenes in the court room it is fuzzy and slightly distorted
big turns in the story always happened right before the commercial
this episode really makes the characters human by highlighting their flaws

Downfall

We watch "Downfall" more than a week ago and I am finally putting my notes up, kinda late but its the principle of the thing.

"Downfall" notes
beginning:
dull colors, little natural light is used inside most of the buildings.
all things are in order and organized on screen around Hitler.
the camera never keeps the same angle when looking at Hitler; not just looking down or up at him. It shows his hand shaking but he keeps it behind his back.
when they are outside the chaos of war is present. people running, papers flying through the air
when in the bunker camera is close giving a sense of entrapment.
middle:
shows neat and ordered building from the beginning empty or messy.
shows Hitler falling form "grace"
his hand is more unsteady, feels betrayed by his men. the camera doesn't look up at him anymore.
close to end:
he can no longer steady his hand
he more pale in the face
the scenes have less talking
most soldiers have lost their poise and formality
people are showing more emotion
the last high ranking officers are sullen
Hitler kills himself;the bodies are covered when they carry them out to burn them, officers salute
only shows casing in some blood in his room
end:
show them all dressed as soldiers clothes are dirty; so are they
camera is always eye level and is never completely steady
tell of what happened to people after the war
shows short interview with secretary, shows how it affects all life
"being young is not an excuse"

I can see how this movie had some pretty big controversy when it came out because of the humanization of Hitler but it does a great job of showing is power and the deterioration of that power. When the city is falling all around them the officers remain calm and faithful to him. I feel they did a great job for putting this movie together and it provides a completely different view of the war.

The American Dream?

Alas I could not find the article I was suppose to read, "Founding Brothers: Kane, Corleone, and the American dream," but I will try to answer the question as best I can. To much avail I can't truely think of any other tragic ends to people who persue the American dream in terms of what these characters have been surrounded in. The idea of wealth and power are things we can look for but some don't get. A pursuit of freedom and wealth I can think of Lenny from Of Mice and Men, he was trying to break free of his poor postion but he could not fit in to the world he wanted to be in because of his mental handicap.
Maybe I can refer to Fear and loathing in Las Vegas; that is Hunter S. Thompson's reason for going to Las Vegas, to find the American dream. He says he does find it at the casino that is a circus. He tells the story of the owner and how he came from being a nobody to owning a very busy casino in Las Vegas; gaining all this power and money, every one comes to Las Vegas for that quick trip to fame and fortune but it rarely happens. The American dream isn't freedom anymore its wealth and power and when you pursue that to hard the end results can only be tragic.

The Thousand Words

Well, we say a picture is worth a thousand words but I'm not sure if I can give you that many about this one. I woke up and took the picture at noon on Sunday, today, and it was of me looking out my bedroom window. As you can tell my Landcruiser is in the photo, I have a tree as well. There are other buildings in the back ground giving it a good sense of distance there are also the bars that section of the window adding to that effect. Th only thing truly in the center of the picture is the lock on the window , its the first things you really focus in on. Its not a bad picture but too bad the screen makes it look really blurry.

Progress 2

I've figured I'm gonna do the scene where we go somewhere else in my car, it will be something different and hopefully prove to be worth it.
I plan on only using two people in the film, easier for dialouge and scheduling filming will be easier with that fewer people.
I plan to work on the dialouge and maybe have a rough draft up next week but tests might not allow it. lets hope for the best and go with it.

Title Characters

So a film title is suppose to be a glimpse into what the show or movie is about. The font and other elements give ideas as to what is going on. I recently started watching a show I hadn't seen in a while and decided I would write about its title. The is The Invisible Man, a short lived series on the sci-fi channel and it was good for what is the a-typical sci-fi channel show. Now the title may look like any other show title but I feel it does do a little to give its. A short synopsis is given by the main character then the opening credits start. The actors name appears with clips of the character but the fonts used is interesting. Its looks like sans serif or miscellaneous letter but I'm not too sure. What is interesting about it, its whole but then a line starts to go out around it like and invisible layer or showing character development. Then The title appears like the Invisible man would with a layer of quicksilver forming around him, then it disappears to a black background and the show starts.

Progress 1

I haven't really done much for my project since working on the main proposal. I have scouted some places out for the possible scene where I change location. I'll get some pics up when I decided to charge my camera again. The places are: a car, this huge tree in the Brooks Center parking lot, the benches outside Vickery, and maybe at the boat house on the beach or dock. I plan on shooting the rest of the scenes in my apartment.

Project Proposal

What?:
I want to make a short movie. I’ve never done it but I have had a few friends that have and it seemed pretty awesome I plan to learn a lot from it and maybe keep doing some of the things I learn from it.
Why?:
I want to see how much a message can be changed through subtle or large changes visually in a short scene.
How?:
I will vary things on different scales for each scene while trying to find a visual base that will connect them all. I plan to do five or six scenes that will all vary in one way or another:
1) scene one will be the base scene. Nothing to big and a stationary camera.
2) scene two will show a change in clothing. That characters will be wearing and surrounded by things that will reflect their mood. The camera will be stationary again.
3) scene three will have the camera moving around the scene. The characters will have the same clothing as scene one.
4) scene four will have a location change and the camera will return to being stationary.
5) scene five will be a slide show but of photos from the scene and done to the audio from it.
6) scene six will have the same stationary camera but be put to sock puppets. I’m still not too sure if I want to do this but we’ll see how much time I have.
The script will be ambiguous so the mood will have a chance to change between scenes and allow there to be hopefully variation in the message.

Font Me.0

So I chose "Kristen ITC" as the fonst that would represent me well. No, I'm not a girl, things just worked out that way that the font verson of me is. I think its a good choice for me because it has a form of uniformity but the words don't seem to fit together. I like to say I'm a neat mess and think it works pretty well. I made it red, well.... because of my beard. I feel that is a strong characteristic about me which is reasy to identify. I also made it bold because I'ma big guy and that just seemed to make sense. Included in the pic are other "candidates" that I felt would be strong but I hope you can identify which one is me.

Picture Poverty

Poverty Hasn't really changed in the past 70 odd years has it. The image and how much it affects us has though. We always associate poverty with homelessness but they aren't the same thing. It might just be the step above being homeless. How has the image changed? Do we blur the line and just assume they are the same, no... I just don't like how people stricken by poverty are always given a negative image when some of the people I know that might not be well off financially are some of the nicer and less trivial people that I know. Why isn't that a popular image? Are we so material that we can't just let them be considered as good as we are? I hope that image can change.

The Not So Real Me

So we were assigned to design an avatar in Second Life. No limitations just make one and give the reason to why they are the way they are. Well... I didn't want him to be just like me but similar so I've come up with this background story.
Ernest Arctor an every day man; that average guy that lives down the street and wakes up every day just like the rest of you. He puts his shirts on the same way, one sleeve at a time, but some times the normal isn't always normal. The life he lead before you meet this mild man is one of heroes or legends, maybe just folk lore, but the distortion of his life in time to come will be of great tales. Born in the moutains he was raised in the image of his ancestors, pioneers of the country, knowledged men of the land, Mountain Men. He fought to protect his past and small moutain town he was raised in all his life. With the blessings of the medicene men of the local area he was given powers that allowed him to grow strong and become one with nature. With theses gifts he decided to move to the city and help protect the city... then he wakes up from another ridiculous dream and eats some toast with juice for breakfast.
You really thought he was some alter ego to a super hero but alas he is not, he is my virtual alter ego. I made him like me as much as I could but gave him some super hero traits; muscles, glasses, awesome pants....

I wear glasses and have some pretty awesome pants by the way.

Lets Prime the Pump

I'm not sure if we're suppose to post about our projects but I figure good if we are and if not... well it will just help me think a little more about it.
I figured I could do a simple movie project but take a serious aproach to it. I want to take a short scene I write and apply different ways of setting it up that will hopefully affect how you convey the message being sent. Hopefully I will be able to right something ambiguos that they are talking about so what they are saying and what you are interpreting will change.I don't want filming it to be ver complicated to so there will probably just a still camera; this will give something consistant through out each scene and help tie them more together.
The scene will be shot 5 or six times:
1.Normal Scene (base for the rest)
2.Costumes (something ridiculous, that might give a new message)
3.Music (have suddle music in all the scenes that is the same, but this one it is completly different)
4.Location (somewhere different from all the other scenes, that seems displaced)
5.Sock Puppets? (some kind of puppet or device that will be used insted of actors)
6.How They Speak (each actor will speak in a different manner; i.e. yelling, whispering...)

I hope this ends up working because it feels like something I'd enjoy and seems like it makes sense with trying to understand different ways of visually communicating. I'll try to keep updates but we'll see how things pan out, hopefully for the best.

If I designed a myspace page for my friend...

I decided, for my assignment, I would choose to design a myspace page for my friend Sean. To start I would choose his profile picture. It would either be a candid shot of him doing something he most definitely enjoy(crew, hiking, hanging out) or a pic of him and his girlfriend. I would choose one of these because they show a good view of him. For his background I would find a picture that has something to do with a landscape or an interesting piece of art. The landscape would show his appreciation of nature and the piece of art would be a look at his fascination is things like that. I don't think I would change the style of font because that seems like something he wouldn't do; a small detail that he wouldn't care to change. The color of the font would of course have to change in order for it to work with the background. There definitely be a song to play on his profile. The song would be light maybe just an acoustic guitar. I feel this would give a good overview of who he is and allow people to have and easy to enjoy web page.

What is Visual Communication?

I think visual communication is pretty simple. It is the way we communicate with each other through different types of visual media, i.e. pictures, movies, even font. The way we understand the message trying to be sent is how we perceive it and not everyone sees in the same way. It is a effective way to relay information and we do our best to understand what is trying to be said. We see images every day and every where we look, sometimes we see the message and don't even know it. The world is vast and the ideas of visually communicating are left to the imagination, we'll see where we go next.
