In class we looked at two different games in dept, World of Warcraft(WOW) and America's Army(AA). They can both be approached differently from serious standpoints.
WOW is probably taken quite seriously by gamers with its fantasy elements of character and world design. The endless amount of customization for the character lets it become more personal allowing you to become this fantasy hero you wanted to be in your mind. The ever expanding world and wide range of quests you can embark on involve more and more involvement of the player. The fantasy element of design is perfect for this for its more cartoonish in a way of not being realistic in character design and races to choose from. This is perfect for character creation and player involvement; for the limits are almost unknown.
AA is taken serious from its game play design and realistic elements the play a strong role in the game. It is basically a recruiting tool for the US Army but allows you to see how much is expected of a person in the army. Countless training missions need to be done before you can do certain missions and realistic elements are incorporated such as stamina, limited ammunition, and a strong reliance on team play. The graphics are as realistic as possible to give you a real life feel and while keeping the game element alive. Real life people are used as in-game characters letting you see the human element in the army.
Both games are pretty unique in their design and intention but a great length of time has been involved in creating these to serious games. I guess seriousness of a game is not just determined by design and game play but also by the numerous factors of player involvement that is in mind when developed.

Progress 3
So I have not written a progress report in a while, well at least since the midway report "Thus Far..."
I have the script completed after a slight revision and shooting is just about to be wrapped up. I am re shooting on of the scene takes because I want it to open a different way. The scene is the alternate location one I didn't like how I shot how it opened so we need to basically re shoot the whole scene.
The editing won't be too difficult since most of the scene are one take with out camera changes. The one that will be most difficult will be the scene with the camera actually moving through out the shot and probably the scene with just still shots.
Hopefully it won't be as grueling a task for I have had a roommate who made movies for fun and saw how he did some of things involved in editing. We'll see if I have to say hello to an all nighter; hopefully not.
I present on Tuesday Dec 4. Wish me Luck!

The New Canvas
So we are currently discussing computer graphics in class. I feel that they are a new way of defining a style of art medium. Most images now photo or film get altered to the slightest degree and that will be greatly impacting in the near future. CG is also something to look forward to, its development is still growing rapidly and we see these adavence long after they happen. Its growth can help tap into the imagination and take what was a dream or fantasy and pull it into this world for all to view. Video games are a good sign of this but movie development his another. Some films had to wait for this advancement while others have been remade into a new visual masterpiece. I light the slight touches of CG and limitless imagination that can be let loose upon the world through it.

Thus Far...
My project is strating to come together even more even though I've only completed the preliminary things
I plan to shoot with my Sony Handyman Camcorder which will be very convenient.
The actors will be my roomate and one of my close friends.
The scenes will be shot in my apartment living room and in my car. I chose my car because of the trunk space so it will be easier to shoot the scene.
costumes will be what the actors will have to wear, casual. The scene wear they have a costume change will be one wears brighter colors and the other more dark and pale colors. I might choose to do one where they wear business suits and the only big differences between them is the color of tie they wear.
I'm still not too sure about the sock puppets but I hope that they get used.
I plan to do all the camera work and editing.
The script is still pretty rough, which means the first draft is still being drafted. I'm finding it hard to fill out a script for as long as I want it to be and keep it ambiguous about what they are talking about.
I plan to get shooting done before thanksgiving or atleast a start so when I get back I know what can be done and how much time I will need.

Analyzing the Analyst
In the last lab we had we visually analyzed CSI to analyze how they put together a TV show.
Opening scene, where it flashes from the opening scene to places in Las Vegas.
lots of close-ups on faces faces; camera is usually eye level
always a close-up on things that are being closely examined.
the camera starts by looking at something in the scene then moves to look at the actors in the scene. the camera never stays focused on one thing for too long.
mostly focuses on the person talking
the camera was slow moving when entering the courtroom
when they look at flash backs to the scenes in the court room it is fuzzy and slightly distorted
big turns in the story always happened right before the commercial
this episode really makes the characters human by highlighting their flaws

Downfall
We watch "Downfall" more than a week ago and I am finally putting my notes up, kinda late but its the principle of the thing.
"Downfall" notes
beginning:
dull colors, little natural light is used inside most of the buildings.
all things are in order and organized on screen around Hitler.
the camera never keeps the same angle when looking at Hitler; not just looking down or up at him. It shows his hand shaking but he keeps it behind his back.
when they are outside the chaos of war is present. people running, papers flying through the air
when in the bunker camera is close giving a sense of entrapment.
middle:
shows neat and ordered building from the beginning empty or messy.
shows Hitler falling form "grace"
his hand is more unsteady, feels betrayed by his men. the camera doesn't look up at him anymore.
close to end:
he can no longer steady his hand
he more pale in the face
the scenes have less talking
most soldiers have lost their poise and formality
people are showing more emotion
the last high ranking officers are sullen
Hitler kills himself;the bodies are covered when they carry them out to burn them, officers salute
only shows casing in some blood in his room
end:
show them all dressed as soldiers clothes are dirty; so are they
camera is always eye level and is never completely steady
tell of what happened to people after the war
shows short interview with secretary, shows how it affects all life
"being young is not an excuse"
I can see how this movie had some pretty big controversy when it came out because of the humanization of Hitler but it does a great job of showing is power and the deterioration of that power. When the city is falling all around them the officers remain calm and faithful to him. I feel they did a great job for putting this movie together and it provides a completely different view of the war.
